June 2018 Newsletter

Dear Families,

SUMMER HOLIDAY CLUB **We are open for bookings!**

The quad bikes are booked, the cupboards are bursting with craft materials and the Playworkers are raring to go! Yes, the summer scheme is open for bookings!

The weekly themes are all based around Summer, and include Festivals, Holidays, the Beach and the Great Outdoors! We have lots of exciting day trips planned, including visits to Cattle Country, Animal Farm Theme Park and Avon Valley Country Park, as well as some exciting workshops, including a visit from the Ape Project, the Sensory Truck, and everyone’s favourite- Quad bikes and bouncy castle. We will also be taking the children to the park and the cinema.

There are also some fun activities planned including water fights and games, parachute games, crab collages, and outdoor den building. We will also be making cotton candy playdoh, baking cakes and making our own upside-down tomato planters. The children gave us lots of ideas and requests for activities, and we have had a lot of fun turning them into the activities on the summer programme. Unfortunately flying to Paris wasn’t one we were able to do, although we loved the idea!

During Holiday Club the children also have access to a huge variety of equipment, including table football, Wii, hockey, football, skipping, pool, table tennis and air hockey, as well as den building, construction and craft materials. We also have lots of Playworkers in every day for the children to play with, if they wish.

We say it every holiday, but please do book as early as you can. There are always some parents caught out, and some days can fill up before the summer starts. Once booked, places are non-refundable. If you have any questions about the activities, or making a booking, or anything else please contact Jenny.

THE BRISTOL EATING BETTER AWARD We are delighted to announce that we have achieved Gold in the Bristol Eating Better award. We have also won a Sugar Smart award! We are committed to providing healthy snacks, with just occasional treats for our children. It is a pleasure to see how much the children enjoy eating fresh fruit every day.

And do you know that Liam is currently turning our left-over fruit and vegetable waste into compost? The children put all their waste (orange peel, apple cores, strawberry leaves etc) into a bowl and Liam takes it to the compost bin at the end of each session. We are hoping at some point we can grow something with the compost! We will keep you posted.

DAY TRIPS Over the summer we have four day trips booked. Day trips are always great fun, and a highlight of the holiday for many children. The children are put into groups of 4, 5 or 6 children, usually with other children of a similar age, their friends and a familiar playworker! The children spend the day in their groups, although we all meet up for morning and afternoon snack, as well as lunch. The Playworkers support the children in their group as they decide where they would like to play, and what they would like to explore.

If anyone has any questions about trip days, please let us know.

RECYCLING You may have noticed a set of drawers next to our sink that are full of the children’s recycling! We have more than halved the amount of landfill rubbish we produce each day in the last six months. We have been talking to the children a lot about being green, and taking care of our planet, and are proud of their efforts in helping us! After talking it through with the children we will no longer be buying glitter, although we will use up what we have left in our cupboards. We have also been doing a lot of junk modelling- using materials the Playworkers and parents have brought in from home, as well as lots of exciting materials we have purchased from the Scrapstore!

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB We still have a few spaces available on Fridays- let Roberta know if you are interested. If you have requested places for September, you should have heard by now if you have been allocated them. If you do not want ASC places that you currently have please let Roberta know as soon as possible, so she can offer them to another family.

We are still waiting for a formal response from the HC3 Governors regarding their decision on a later finishing time.

WHO’S WHO Siobhan has worked here for over four years. She is a qualified primary school teacher and has a degree in Education Studies. Siobhan will be working in the summer holidays covering Liam who is taking a well-deserved, belated three-week honeymoon travelling around America. Siobhan’s favourite parts of the job are the baking activities and chatting to the children. Out of work Siobhan enjoys travelling, especially city breaks, as well as fashion and shopping.

Next time you are in please come and say hello!

THE APE PROJECT We are very excited that the Ape Project are coming in to visit us over the summer holidays!
